What I’m Watching: Veep (Season Premiere)

Veep: Season 5, Episode 1 “Morning After” (B+)

What a delight it is to have this show back. There’s nothing else on the air that’s so blissfully unafraid to insult anyone, and Selina embodies that more than anyone. The state of a tie presents an interesting obstacle, one that requires the election and the campaign to be stretched out even more, which is great. I love that Bill just showed up expecting that he was still a top confidante to the president, and his subsequent arrest was a real boon to the campaign that hopefully cancelled out the destructive power of Selina’s pimple. I chuckled every time Kent stressed the correct pronunciation of Nevada and no one else cared. The office exercise competition is quite funny, and the best part of the whole thing was Sue sitting and answering a phone as she claimed that her work kept her active. Mike breaking the news about his impending fatherhood, that apparently Wendy had only told him about that very morning, went over extremely poorly with Selina, and I’m sure that’s going to be a tough adjustment that Selina will constantly make him sorry he ever made. Tom smartly shied away from being appointed the economy czar, and I love that Selina made a public announcement about it anyway and then rubbed his face in it when he came to protest. Richard getting promoted so that Jonah is now his assistant is probably the best thing that’s ever happened, and the most fantastic part of it all was Richard’s assertion that, though he has two masters’ degrees, getting coffee is harder because you have to know moods.
