What I’m Watching: Brockmire

Brockmire: Season 1, Episode 4 “Retaliation” (B)

I’m still into this show, but I found the riot-related plotline of this episode to be less than entirely engaging. Maybe it’s because I’m not all that into sports, but for me it was far less interesting than everything else that was going on. Brockmire’s lack of a real reaction to a coach being kidnapped and then just left to run home without the ability to see where he was going also doesn’t recommend him too much as a human being, even though he’s far from the least moral person who appeared in this episode. It was intriguing and enlightening to meet the very sex-addicted Lucy, played fantastically by Katie Finneran, who I remember most from her roles on “Wonderfalls” and “The Inside.” Telling Brockmire that she was glad that he got to speak his truth but that she didn’t care if he forgave her was a helpful way to sort of close that book, and she was evidently more invested in being part of her sex party than actually talking to him. I suspect – and hope – this isn’t the last that we’ve seen of her, and I’d love to find out more how Jules feels about this, and to see the two of them interact. At the very worst, at least this all helped to put Brockmire back on top and give him a viral video that portrayed him in a good light. He’s nothing if not passionate, and I think at this moment he’s actually in a pretty decent place. That can’t last for long, and that’s one of the reasons this show exists.
