What I’m Watching: Jane the Virgin

Jane the Virgin: Season 3, Episode 15 “Chapter Fifty-Nine” (B+)

I make mention of it occasionally, but it is tremendously impressive that, every single week, this show finds a way to be clever and fanciful in highlighting one of its themes. This week, it was the flirtation detector, with a thorough radar analysis of each person to see what romantic signs they were putting out, that worked very well and provided some fun, especially since nearly each time it was used, someone was reading it wrong. Jane’s introductory walk in her new dress was a great instance of her perceiving things in a different manner than they actually happened, and she managed to do better with Dennis than when she got Alex’s vibe totally wrong. Petra coming along to make it clear that Jane is the third wheel was another red herring, since the newly-toothless hotelier is ready to fall for Chuck at the same time that Rafael has realized that he still harbors feelings for her. After Rogelio kept freaking out that Bruce wasn’t returning his messages, how great was it that Xiomara just blurted out that she was in love with him, they kissed, and then moved on past the settlement to blissful happiness. Having a costar more attractive than him is a hurdle we can all get over, though Jane having the hots for him isn’t going to help matters at all. Alba getting a love storyline of her own is a nice treat, and it was hilarious that she and Jorge got caught making out at the golf course after they hid to avoid ruining Jane’s first big date.
