What I'm Watching: Insecure

Insecure: Season 2, Episode 2 "Hella Questions" (B+)

One of the things I like most about this show is that it shoots pretty straight without convoluted twists that seem designed merely to make the show more alluring to viewers. Its characters do the complicating when they try to figure their way out of the tough situations they get themselves into. It makes total sense that Issa would be struggling to figure out what to make of her unexpectedly passionate encounter with Lawrence, and I'm surprised that all she did was send Molly to happen to run into him so that she could feel out how he felt about things. Lawrence didn't waste much time in blurting out the truth to his new girlfriend, who reacted angrily to the news and didn't seem likely to forgive him. As Issa was spending a bit too much time obsessing about who this new girl was and imagining punching her in the face and telling her that she got "jalapeƱo popped," it turns out that she was actually more forgiving, up for letting him back into her life with a casual dinner invitation. It was exciting to see the surprise success of the We Got Y'all program at the school with Issa and Frieda shocked to see so many attendees with a new adviser there, and it's just a shame that these people are intolerant in a way that Issa might be able to get past but Frieda doesn't seem so willing to let go of. Molly being told that she subscribes too much to magical thinking didn't go over well, and I liked her reaction to the suggestion of scheduling a follow-up appointment.
