What I’m Watching: Insecure

Insecure: Season 2, Episode 3 “Hella Open” (B+)

Issa and Lawrence are a thing of the past, but neither of them seem to know exactly what it is that they want. Desperate to go out and have a good time, Issa hit a particular low when a guy told her that he was only talking to her because his friend wanted to spend time with Molly and then proceeded to ask her if she had any other friends. Celebrating the fact that she got wings was her only real consolation prize, and she couldn’t even find batteries for her vibrator at home. Her dalliance with her neighbor was plenty awkward and weirdly casual, but it left her smiling at the end in a more definitive way than she was when Lawrence left. I loved her quick bathroom rap too. Lawrence was sweet when he showed up to Tasha’s family thing, and she seemed completely okay with the fact that he had to leave to go to a work thing. But when he stayed there the whole night and didn’t come back, she sounded more concerned than anything else. That was definitely the wrong moment to tell her that he didn’t want to get into anything serious, and she let him have it for that. This episode’s surprise guest star was none other than Emmy nominee (and past winner) Sterling K. Brown from “This Is Us” as Lionel, who was far too much like Molly for her own comfort and managed to get completely ignored because she didn’t want to dive all that deep into a potential relationship with him.
