What I’m Watching: Ted Lasso

Ted Lasso: Season 1, Episode 6 “Two Aces” (B+)

This episode started off with the melancholy sight of Ted taking off his wedding ring, and he was definitely off-balance when he showed up to work. But the two intense and unprecedented outbursts we saw from him didn’t have anything to do with that, but rather with his most difficult and also potentially most talented player, Jamie Tartt. His attitude has been unacceptable for a while, but deciding that he didn’t feel like practicing was taking it a step too far, and Ted retaliated by reaming him out in front of everyone and then having him set up the cones. Dani Rojas is a great new addition to the show, and I was very puzzled when I saw the photo on the main Apple TV Plus screen for this show include an actor I didn’t know, since Christo Fernandez only makes his first appearance in this first episode of the back half of the season. After getting a lesson on Pavlovian concepts that he didn’t quite understand from Keeley, Jamie finally realized the value of teamwork, and Higgins’ one shining moment where Rebecca could have been proud of him was instead seen as a move to undercut her by putting the team first, resulting in Jamie being sent back to Man City. Dani’s great attitude should be helpful, but it’s thrown everyone for a loop. Though Keeley hasn’t permeated Roy’s softer side just yet, it’s good that she’s around to encourage Rebecca, whose classification in the tabloid as “Old Rebecca” was a pretty crushing blow.
