The Boys: Season 3, Episode 5 “The Last Time to Look on This World of Lies” (B+)
Every time it feels like the good guys are getting closer to gaining the upper hand, Homelander just shows up to destroy everything. Telling Maeve that he could smell Butcher on her prompted a response similar to the one that Stan gave him, and then there was that violent cut before Starlight showed up to demand answers from an uninterested Ashley. The Deep being appointed the head of Crime Analytics rubbed a lot of people the wrong way, with his cupcake delivery not smoothing things over at all, and the effects of his new and useless leadership were seen right away when Starlight was trying to get information she needed. Homelander going on talk shows to say that people should go out and live when there was very clearly a present danger was indicative of just how little he actually cares for the wellbeing of anyone but him. Blue Hawk’s apology forum went south very quickly when he felt the need to point out that Black people commit a disproportionate number of crimes, and then he got extremely violent with everyone before going on the news to say that he was “standing up to Antifa thugs.” Kimiko’s miraculous ability to speak was highlighted by an unexpected but celebratory musical number, one that was sadly followed up by Frenchie getting taken by Little Nina. I enjoyed the guest appearances from Paul Reiser and Seth Rogen, and I’m certainly disturbed by the lengths Butcher and Hughie are apparently willing to go to in order to get Soldier Boy on their side.
