The 74th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations will be announced on Tuesday, July 12th. As always, chime in below in the comments with any thoughts of your own.
Last year’s nominees: Alec Baldwin, Dave Chappelle, Morgan Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Dan Levy
The competition: SNL dominated this category last year with four out of five slots, and the last time the variety sketch series got just one nomination in this race was way back in 2012. This year’s eligible slate includes Jason Sudeikis (Saturday Night Live), Jerrod Carmichael (Saturday Night Live), Kieran Culkin (Saturday Night Live), Will Forte (Saturday Night Live), and John Mulaney (Saturday Night Live), the only member of this crowd to be previously nominated for SNL. Though the show has only produced four nominees over the course of ten seasons, this year could be good for Bill Hader (Curb Your Enthusiasm), Josh Gad (Curb Your Enthusiasm), or Albert Brooks (Curb Your Enthusiasm). Watch out also for James Lance (Ted Lasso), Anthony Head (Ted Lasso), Sam Richardson (Ted Lasso), Matt Walsh (Ghosts), Robert Ray Wisdom (Barry), Nathan Lane (Only Murders in the Building), James Caverly (Only Murders in the Building), Christian Clemenson (Julia), and James Cromwell (Julia). It doesn’t seem right, but what are the chances that two white guys - Alexander Skarsgard (Atlanta) and Liam Neeson (Atlanta) - get nominated for a show that’s so explicitly not about white people?
The predicted nominees: Kieran Culkin, Bill Hader, Nathan Lane, Alexander Skarsgard, Jason Sudeikis, Matt Walsh
The predicted winner: I see Lane winning this.
