What I’m Watching: Ms. Marvel

Ms. Marvel: Season 1, Episode 4 “Seeing Red” (B+)

Kamala’s trip to Pakistan didn’t feel like it was going to be all that liberating considering her mother was still disciplining her and reminding her that she was grounded while they were on the plane with someone in the seat between them. But as soon as they landed, the dynamic changed since Muneeba was more concerned with what her own mother thought of her and the life choices she had made. Kamala wearing jeans to the restaurant which then wouldn’t let them eat inside was not a great start, but then she went ahead and found the train station, where Kareem found her right away. I like that she tried to insist that she could be Canadian when, as Kareem pointed out, she was wearing a t-shirt that said New Jersey, and she did a spectacular job of using her powers to stay one step ahead of him in battle. He didn’t turn out to be the real enemy, of course, and neither did Kamran, who got left behind by his own mother when they made their escape from prison. They arrived in Karachi very quickly to finish what they started, and it’s good that Kamala found a group most interested in protecting her. She’s also acclimating to local spices and getting her own nickname, doing her best to feel at home in a place that has plenty of cultural and ancestral relevance to her. I doubt her grandmother is going to come home with them, but they also may not yet be done with their adventures in Pakistan.
