The 74th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations will be announced on Tuesday, July 12th. As always, chime in below in the comments with any thoughts of your own.
Last year’s nominees: Anthony Anderson, Michael Douglas, William H. Macy, Jason Sudeikis, Kenan Thompson
The competition: It’s clear that last year’s winner, Jason Sudeikis (Ted Lasso), will be back. Anthony Anderson (black-ish) should return for his show’s final season, but I wouldn’t expect the same for Kenan Thompson (Kenan) now that his series is done after two seasons. Past winners Donald Glover (Atlanta) and Bill Hader (Barry) finally brought their characters back from long hiatuses, and they should be joined by a pair of newcomers from the same show, Steve Martin (Only Murders in the Building) and Martin Short (Only Murders in the Same Building). That could wrap the category up in a neat bow, but it’s worth considering a few other contenders. Don Cheadle (Black Monday) and Larry David (Curb Your Enthusiasm) have been nominated before for these same roles, while Ricky Gervais (After Life) is always a possibility. Matt Berry (What We Do in the Shadows), Kayvan Novak (What We Do in the Shadows), Ralph Macchio (Cobra Kai), and William Zabka (Cobra Kai) could all get votes given the breakthrough of their roles into the top categories the last time they were eligible. Rhys Darby (Our Flag Means Death) starred on a very well-received new show, while genre voters might choose Alan Tudyk (Resident Alien), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), or, I’d say most likely, John Cena (Peacemaker). It also pains me to think that Nicholas Hoult (The Great) will once again not get nominated for an Emmy after he’s now in the right category.
The predicted nominees: Anderson, Glover, Hader, Martin, Short, Sudeikis
The predicted winner: I think Sudeikis wins again.
