His Dark Materials: Season 3, Episode 4 “Lyra and Her Death” (B)
While it’s good to know that Mrs. Coulter was still acting in the interest of Lyra and her new allies, she went about it in such a direct, confrontational way that she got caught very quickly. Calling Father President Hugh and publicly challenging him in front of everyone didn’t go too well, and now she might find herself forcibly separated from her daemon in a show of power from the religious authority that is so set on eviscerating “sin itself” that it’s willing to do just about anything in the name of that goal. Dr. Cooper was neutralized but that won’t be enough to save Lyra, someone who is actively venturing into the land of the dead, a place that she doesn’t belong. I’ll admit I don’t quite follow this whole premise, but this show does have some weird supernatural elements that don’t quite fall under the science fiction category. Pan telling Lyra that she was choosing Roger over him didn’t sit well with Lyra, but it is true, and all this time spent on reuniting with Roger when they really need to be saving the world and themselves doesn’t feel like the best idea. Mary also remains on her own quest of sorts, and I’ll be more content when all the characters are interacting together and fighting against the same enemies. We’re now halfway through the season and so I imagine things are only going to get more intense and start converging as the fate of the world itself hangs in the balance.
