What I’m Watching: The L Word: Generation Q

The L Word: Generation Q; Season 3, Episode 4 “Last to Know” (B+)

Secret relationships never remain that way for long, and there are two people whose lives are about to be changed in a big way as a result of their indiscretions. Finley is going to have a hard time working with Shane after seeing her with Ivy in the car, and after some panic on Sophie’s part, she appears to have talked herself down and should be able to continue in her monogamous relationship with Finley. Shane, on the other hand, made the right choice to break things off with Ivy but did so in sight of Tess, who was being cold to her as she was focused instead on spending time with her mom and is unlikely to forgive Shane, an unfortunate continuation of her typical patterns. I was pleasantly surprised to see that Max was one of the parents Micah and Maribel met, and it’s especially interesting since I think Max’s arc on the original series is considered one of the less positive instances of inclusive storytelling. But this appearance felt good and Shane addressed that in part by apologizing to Max for how they treated him before having her own inescapable image thrown back at her by him. Micah putting on the avocado costume after a rough night with Maribel was a sweet gesture, and it’s nice to see that some couples may even work out. I do hope that Dani seeks out an absent Gigi rather than try to move on right away, and I’m pleased to see that Alice and Taylor are doing well after an intense start to their romance that threatened to highlight the major differences between them.
