What I'm Watching: John from Cincinnati (Series Premiere)

John from Cincinnati: Season 1, Episode 1 "His Visit: Day One" (C)

This is a strange show to be sure. The dialogue often feels like it comes out of a script from creator David Milch's previous show "Deadwood", and does not quite fit right in the modern-day surfing setting. This kind of crazy talk comes not only from the bizarre and mysterious title character John, but also from lottery winner Barry (the fantastic Matt Winston in a less-than-stellar role). John is a weird character, and everyone (except for Bill) accepts him far too quickly and easily. The Yost family is just peculiar, the most interesting of which, grandfather Mitch, is played very well by Bruce Greenwood. Ed O'Neiil's Bill is another memorable character, and I cannot decide how I feel about him. The floating in mid-air feels out of place, especially coupled with John's continuous babbling of "the end is near". I am not sure if I can go for another hour of this drama, but if it is easily accessible (like the pilot, which is available free on HBO.com), I may give it another shot.
