What I’m Watching: 2 Broke Girls

2 Broke Girls: Season 1, Episode 8 “And Hoarder Culture” (B+)

It’s entertaining to see Max get so excited about something as random and silly as hoarder culture. It still allows her to fire off her signature retorts, but exposes an unusual interest and fascination with something that just makes her happy to mock. Not seeing the hoarder, and his apparently present mother, was probably better since it added to the comedy of the situation, which ended up making the girls a hefty amount of cash to add to the cupcake fund, thanks to Caroline’s strong business savvy. Coupled with her uncertain romance with Johnny, this was an episode all about Max, with Caroline happily sitting back and doing her best to get her best friend’s life in order. Everything seemed to suddenly revolve around Max, as even Oleg realized that his “Table 3, Table 9, Table 69” routine was inappropriately-timed when Max was talking to Johnny. The revelation that Johnny has a girlfriend is truly unfortunate, and well-intended as his confession of confused affection for Max was, it doesn’t make up for leading her on for such a long time. It’s amusing that what Max would be most upset about was the fact that his girlfriend was two cool things she could never be: black and British. I’m not sure how much more Johnny will be around in the near future, but I enjoyed the fact that the usually-friendless Han seemed to have established a rapport with him, even if Max’s heartbreak led immediately to the breakup of his bromance.
