What I’m Watching: Dexter

Dexter: Season 6, Episode 7 “Nebraska” (B+)

This episode is quite a throwback to seasons past, as we have references back to not one but two season-long featured killers. Rudy showed up at the end of the previous installment, and here he serves as a substitute for Harry since Dexter has now killed someone out of passion rather than ritual. Having Rudy along for the ride as Dexter journeys to Nebraska to figure out what happened to the remaining members of the Mitchell family changed things from the way they usually are in a major way. Dexter having sex with a clerk at a convenience store was a rather shocking event, but Rudy wanted him to kill her just for the hell of it. Nebraska sure wasn’t too friendly, and it gave Dexter another opportunity to kill out of rage and self-defense when the motel clerk tried to extort him for $10,000. For the number of people he’s be killing in passion, he’s actually been letting a bunch go, with Travis first and now Jonah. It’s reassuring to see Dexter leave his brother behind and pitch up a hitchhiking Harry as he reenters Miami. Travis seems desperate to get out, but I have a feeling that Gellar’s haunting words will eat at him until he returns to the cause, though Louis’ narrowed list may help Miami Metro get to him before he has a change of heart again. I’m glad that Deb and Quinn have been able to get back to a good place, and it’s probably for the best that they’re not going to give it another shot with her being the lieutenant and all.

Interesting, I haven't heard anybody call him Rudy ever since we found out his real name was Brian Moser (or Biny, as Dexter called him when he was a toddler). I did enjoy this episode quite a bit, but was kind of let down at the end because, well, I wanted Brian to stick around for a few more episodes. After that shocking scene last week of Dexter drowning Nick, I feel that Dexter abandoning Brian after only one episode was kind of a wasted opportunity. I wanted to see more of this dark Dexter, but I guess he needs to remain a character we can sympathize with.

I'll always think of him as Rudy! I did debate what to call him though. I think that Dexter's compassion, with both Travis and Jonah, is what brought Harry back.
