What I’m Watching: Psych

Psych: Season 6, Episode 4 “The Amazing Psych-Man & Tap-Man, Issue #2” (B)

There are times when this show attempts to something wild and majestic, and, bold as that may be, I wish it would try a little harder. That’s to say that the concept for, and stylization of, this episode was quite strong, yet there’s something lacking in terms of its execution and, mainly, its plotting. The comic book opening credits followed in the line of many such specialized installments, and I liked how this one was framed like a comic book. Shawn being concerned about Juliet’s apparent affection for the Mantis was entertaining, as was the immediate effect it had on his self-confidence and psychic performance. Of course, what was most memorable about this theme was the superhero with the power to, essentially, dance. Shawn writing on Gus’ custom-made shirt to cause a distraction and theorizing that being used as a human shield is a very noble way to meet one’s maker were amusing moments to be sure. The Mantis himself, however, wasn’t all that exciting. His serious skills were a bit too on-the-money, what with his reporter cover identity and all, and then with him turning out to be a bad guy. I’m not sure what the new guy, Scott, will bring to the table, and I really hope that he isn’t going to be a rival love interest for Juliet, because with all of the shenanigans going on lately, I’m a bit worried about our favorite couple, who haven’t done all that much in the way of positive bonding or relationship building.
