What I’m Watching: Burn Notice (Mid-Season Premiere)

Burn Notice: Season 5, Episode 13 “Damned If You Do” (B+)

There’s a certain point at which Michael is going to have to realize that he’s never going to go back to just being a regular spy. This show feels repetitive in a sense as yet another omniscient villain is pulling the strings, yet there’s something different about this time and about Anson. That’s most evident in Michael’s kidnapping of Oswald and Oswald’s change of heart when he reveals that Michael would be tagged if he entered the building himself. Everything that Michael has been doing on his missions and jobs in the past was for the greater good, and it’s disconcerting to see him actively working for Anson without a way out. Anson’s direct approach of Sam and Jesse means that, unlike some of his predecessors that meddled in Michael’s life, he wants the whole team to know that he’s watching. Now that Michael has regained security clearance from Agent Pearce, the stakes are going to be more dangerous than ever. I personally think that he ought to come clean with Pearce since she might be able to engineer a way to take Anson down. It’s just a shame that Max is no longer alive since he was the one person who Michael might actually have been able to trust with this kind of information. For now, Michael is simply going to have to do Anson’s bidding, and hope that not too many innocent people get hurt in the process. Madeleine sure doesn’t approve, and I doubt it will take long for the rest of Michael’s crew to start feeling the same way.
