What I’m Watching: Boardwalk Empire

Boardwalk Empire: Season 2, Episode 6 “The Age of Reason” (B+)

This episode started out with quite a bit of symbolism (and books), cutting from Nelson to Teddy being lectured about confession and then later to Jimmy being handed a book by Dominic Chianese’s Whitlock. Margaret seems quite haunted by the notion of having to confess, while Nucky’s concern is far less pure in nature. It was interesting to hear just what ended up being part of Margaret’s confession, scandalous in its own way but definitely not what Nucky might have expected. Nelson’s own struggles with religion nearly got him to confess his sins to his superiors, only to realize that the burn victim was not a threat to him. The damage, however, was done, in that it worried Rose enough to get on a train and come and discover Lucy, who, somewhat fittingly, spent the entire episode off on her own plotline having the baby all by herself. Nelson’s announcement of having bought lemons felt particularly insignificant in the face of what she had accomplished, with, as usual, no support. Jimmy and Manny make for quite an interesting team, and Manny is definitely proving to be the dark comic relief of the show. His comment about his upside-down captive being treif was very funny, and I enjoyed Jimmy’s comment to him, “You can’t kill everyone, Manny, it’s not good business,” to which Manny responded by shooting only one out of three. Nucky’s legal woes seemed primed to go away, despite the lawyer’s shoe color, but it seemed that Harry just can’t be trusted.
