What I’m Watching: Hung

Hung: Season 3, Episode 6 “Money on the Floor” (B+)

I’ve noticed in the past few episodes that Ray is becoming more irritable and generally less likeable. Knowing the history of the show and his character, it’s easy to still sympathize with him, but I can’t help but think that he wouldn’t be appealing to a new viewer who picked up the show where it is now. It’s understandable that he would be annoyed about Tanya suggesting adding another prostitute to their business, but he has been walking all over her and treating her like a doormat, much like most of the people in her life do. One of my favorite things in a television series is when two characters that have never or rarely met share the screen, and therefore Ray’s interaction with Charlie was quite a delight. Sandee and Jason continue to prove themselves to be among the dumbest people on the planet, and even Tanya doesn’t seem to be able to bear their stupidity, as illustrated in an impossible game of charades. Lenore seems poised to strike a definite blow to Ray and Tanya, and the revelation that Ray’s latest date is transgendered spells trouble, since Ray is sure to be unhappy about that, though apparently Jason wouldn’t mind. What’s most notable about that surprising turn of events is that it was entirely Ray’s fault and nothing to do with boxed-out pimp Tanya, so when Ray comes to blame her for it, I imagine she and Charlie both won’t be too happy, and a temporary falling out is definitely within the realm of unfortunate possibility.
