What I’m Watching: New Girl

New Girl: Season 1, Episode 5 “Cece Crashes” (B+)

I’m happy to report that this is the first installment of this show that I truly enjoyed, even eliciting a hearty laugh thanks to one spectacularly-delivered line from Zooey Deschanel (“Why wouldn’t his feet be pointing at me? Otherwise he’d be standing like a duck!”). Jess actually saying “beep beep” as she navigated her way through the bar was a great start, as were the refurbished opening credits, now with just Jess and no guys. Incorporating Cece into an episode proved far more effective than I might have imagined, not asking her to do much other than be steely and unresponsive with the guys, who did nothing but hit on her, and throw Jess for a loop by making her think that Nick was seriously into her. Her concern led to a few amusing moments, and I’m glad that things ended up going back to normal with a concluding platonic teeth-brushing session. Schmidt wearing a kimono and Winston taking off his pants and wearing a napkin on his face provided for an entertaining start, and I liked how both men were completely controlled by Cece. Unfortunately for Schmidt, that meant several nasty sunburns, and Winston got off easy, just having to make a sandwich. Schmidt did, however, luck out by getting to hold hands with Cece in bed, but no one will ever believe him. Among the other great moments in this episode were Nick’s claim not to dance because he’s from the town in “Footloose,” and Schmidt’s failed references both to parkour and the film “127 Hours.”
