What I’m Watching: Parenthood

Parenthood: Season 3, Episode 8 “In-Between” (B+)

I’ve always realized that this show has a tremendous ensemble that works together marvelously to create a genuine, believable extended family unit, but there’s something about this episode that reminded me of that fact. It’s nice to see that, while some things do change, other things just get interrupted for a bit before going back to normal. Seth moving into Amber’s place led Sarah down a very dangerous road as she kissed him and then spoke to her mother about how she always had faith in Seth, all within earshot of her daughter. It’s good that Amber intervened, and sweet that Seth left all the birthday cards he missed for both children upon his departure. Mark meeting the whole family was fun, and I enjoyed how Adam so giddily brought up the kissing picture taken at school. One of the episode’s funniest moments came from Drew, who awkwardly asked Amy if they were dating and then proceeded to kick the door closed when she said yes and then noted that it was time for them to make out. Zeek’s desire to attend the opening rather than to babysit backfired considerably when none of the young women knew his music, but fortunately he was able to return home to his loving wife and play some old, familiar tunes. Adam’s new hire understandably made Kristina jealous, and it’s nice that the two of them were able to rekindle their passion after both feeling it missing. Crosby’s anger with Dr. Joe for having landmark moments with Jabar made sense, and Joe made a good point when he came to the Luncheonette, that Crosby could go to the game but that Joe wasn’t going anywhere. I hope his presence doesn’t break Crosby’s heart too badly.
