What I’m Watching: New Girl

New Girl: Season 1, Episode 4 “Naked” (B-)

After a whole month off the air, this show returned to much lower numbers on Tuesday night, which is hardly a surprise given the fact that it lost all of its momentum due to the baseball interruption that preempted it for four straight weeks. In that time, other series like “2 Broke Girls” have doubled their episode counts and personally impressed me much more. The fourth installment feels just like the first three for me, somewhat endearing but ultimately not hilarious in any way. Jess interrupting and ruining the boys’ experience of watching a scary movie is almost expected, but I can’t fault the show for that. Nick isn’t a very compelling character, and though what he’s doing might otherwise be funny, it doesn’t play that way at all. I did like seeing Lake Bell as Amanda from the bar, someone who was too sarcastic and ironic for Nick to ever know if she’s serious. Jess accidentally seeing Nick’s penis and then trying to show him hers threw a huge wrench in that, as it would of course do. Jess presenting him with a normal uttering of the word “penis” was somewhat sentimental, but that’s about it. Schmidt’s unnatural obsession with needing to see Nick’s penis since he was the only one was mildly amusing, as was Winston’s desire to catch up on what he’s missed in the world after his interview didn’t go all that well. This show is only half an hour, so I’m eager to keep watching to see if it gets more endearing, but it’s just not there yet for me at this point.
