What I’m Watching: The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead: Season 2, Episode 3 “Save the Last One” (B+)

There’s nothing like a relatively calm night full of despair and tough choices to bring characters closer together. We haven’t seen much of Glenn in a long time, and to showcase his prayer efforts, dampened considerably by Maggie’s bleak outlook on a higher power, was a rare pleasure. Andrea and Daryl make for a good time, especially since Andrea is clearly over having Dale as a father figure, and I enjoyed their trek into the woods, with some reminiscing about poison oak and vomiting. The sight of the hung zombie was rather disturbing, though that was hardly the most unsettling part of the episode. Back on the road, no one seems to care much about Carol, as even Dale abandons her to take a stroll when she comes out to talk to him. The conversation between Rick and Lori about whether Carl should grow up in this world was quite fascinating, and it’s interesting to see just how differently they feel, with Rick’s anecdote about Carl seeing the deer making the strongest impact. The most monumental development, of course, involves good old Shane, who has officially crossed a line in shooting someone who was willing to risk his life to save a kid he didn’t know and leaving him for worse than dead in order to make a clean getaway. Shane may have given himself a new haircut to hide what happened to Otis, but it’s infinitely more symbolic than that. It’s hard to judge whether Shane would be a bigger threat on his own or remaining in his current place as an integral, and supposedly trustworthy, member of the group.
