What I’m Watching: Boardwalk Empire

Boardwalk Empire: Season 2, Episode 7 “Peg of Old” (B+)

This episode is full of major developments involving multiple characters. Most impactful is the group’s decision to put a hit out on Nucky, something suggested by his own brother and met with pensiveness and enthusiasm by Jimmy. Now, on this show, Nucky couldn’t possibly die, but there’s still the possibility of him being seriously wounded and someone else stepping into his position in the meantime. Jimmy’s semi-warning to Nucky came far too late in the game, and I have a feeling that Nucky, if he’s mentally capable enough, will know exactly who it was who came for him. Lucy going to Nucky was a bold move, and I love how the first thing out of his mouth was the date he had last seen her, so as to discount himself from potential fatherhood. I’ll credit Lucy for actually doing something smart and telling Nucky who the real father was, which got Nelson to show up nice and quick. I’ll also credit Nelson for going immediately to his new superior and confessing the existence of his bastard child so that Nucky couldn’t hold it over him. I’m thrilled that Julianne Nicholson has arrived as prosecutor Esther Randolph, and I’m looking forward to seeing how she chews out other people after treating Nelson with such haughtiness. Margaret’s visit home was plenty eye-opening, and I was delighted to see Emma Kenney from “Shameless” as her younger sister. The episode’s end was brilliant, as Margaret, unaware that Nuky has been shot, goes ahead and gives in to temptation, letting Owen show her a good time in a way that Nucky has not done in a while.
