What I’m Watching: The Office

The Office: Season 8, Episode 6 “Doomsday” (B-)

I’m not sure what it is that’s not working here, because it’s not the cast or the characters. Dwight totally would construct a doomsday device designed to get the rest of the office in trouble without thinking through the consequences, and everyone else would try to work hard but ultimately end up failing. Yet there’s little to nothing truly funny in this half-hour, and that’s what this episode was sorely missing. Andy isn’t as much of a showman as Michael, meaning that he just seems desperate to get Dwight to shut down the device rather than making it into a giant deal. Sometimes that’s a good thing, of course, and Pam sure stepped in to save the day by appealing to Dwight’s sense of hospitality and not mentioning anything about the device. James Spader continues to be one of the most entertaining parts of the show, dryly telling Andy that sometimes he thinks he doesn’t get him at all, and then forcing Jim to continue playing squash after multiple injuries to his person. The episode’s main subplot was a major flop, featuring a character whose presence on the show has just become awkward. Gabe’s efforts to ask Val out were entirely embarrassing, as was his offer to quit when she says she doesn’t date co-workers. It would be nice to see Darryl get a win, but it looks like we won’t see much more of Val beyond this, as we haven’t traveled much to the warehouse anytime recently aside from Andy’s hiring of a new crew.
