What I’m Watching: You’re the Worst

You’re the Worst: Season 2, Episode 8 “Spooky Sunday Funday” (B+)

I’m not usually a fan of Halloween episodes, particularly ones that are actually scary, but this installment was much more creepy than anything else, with Gretchen enjoying the singularly strange Sunday Funday catered specifically to her tastes as Jimmy’s way of making her feel better. This show has moved into much more serious territory after last week’s revelation of Gretchen’s depression, as her fun is cut short by Jimmy congratulating himself on getting her to snap out of it. I’m not sure which speaks louder – her decision to make him think that he had succeeded in fixing her or the fact that he was ready to have drinks with another girl just moments after encountering an obstacle in his current relationship. I’d hope that we can chalk some of that up to his excitement at someone recognizing his costume, but it is deeply troubling nonetheless. Dorothy is one committed Halloween experiencer, and it’s great that, even after Edgar started beating someone up, she still got him to open up and they even had their own sexual experience in the house of horrors. The best plotline, unexpectedly, was Lindsay getting advice on how to call customer service from someone who was supposed to be simulating “Silence of the Lambs.” I also enjoyed her earlier encounter with Paul, who was dressed as Stephen Hawking but having some trouble typing out the correct words. Lindsay’s triumphant return to her power-fueled home was a nice ending, and it’s good to see her score a win.
