What I’m Watching: Grace and Frankie

Grace and Frankie: Season 3, Episode 5 “The Gun” (B+)

We’ve seen Frankie have some trouble letting go of different things in the past, but it’s nothing like this. In fact, her fury wasn’t reserved for Grace alone, since anyone who would even consider the idea of owning a gun was a villain in her mind. Singing incessantly around Grace didn’t do much, and when Jacob came over and didn’t react exactly as she wanted, things could have gotten much worse. Instead, Jacob introduced an unfortunate new element into the conversation by revealing that he didn’t give Grace and Frankie the seed money they needed, prompting Grace to say something even harsher that she couldn’t take back. Frankie made a good point that Grace is never nice about her kids, and I think she may actually leave this time. Only on this show would Grace telling Frankie that Robert got her the gun make Sol wonder whether there was a gun in his house because he was now married to the man. Robert coming out to his mother did go terribly, and I have to recommend that anyone who likes the work of Lois Smith, who played his mother, should see the film “Marjorie Prime,” which I caught at Sundance before interviewing her. Mallory going out with Brianna was a nice treat, and I like that Mallory pushed her to go home with a guy who, in the end, turned out to be an escort, something that Brianna didn’t react to nearly as poorly as I would have expected despite an initial response of shock and disappointment.
