What I’m Watching: Big Sky

Big Sky: Season 1, Episode 8 “The End is Near” (C+)

Things took a dark turn in this hour, following the characters specifically rather than the original narrative of the sex trafficking ring that Rick was trying to deliver the women to over the border. There seem to be few ways out for Ronald at this point yet he’s still clinging to the hope that he can somehow get away, turning into a truly cruel and threatening person with his latest hostage, enterprising young paperboy Erik. He was smart to wait and take a picture of Ronald, but of course that ended up getting him locked up in Ronald’s suspiciously-prepared cage, where he managed to get both his staple gun and taser. There’s no way that he’s going to end up dying in a fire set by Ronald, but that door should have been knocked on by now by someone other than a persistent priest. This Montana town is awfully small, and so naturally Erik’s mother would go straight to Denise to report her son as missing. The trucker research front isn’t helping much, and so they really just have to spend more time on that paper route and identify Ronald as quickly as possible. Both Cassie and Jenny got in Rick’s face and he didn’t give any indication of recognizing them, but somehow Merrilee was able to see something that indicated to her that he was faking everything? That returns us to the less-than-logical conclusion that a bullet directly to Rick’s head did no damage whatsoever and even enabled him to function at a high enough mental capacity to hide his instinct emotions and concoct an elaborate cover story to permit him to escape any consequences for his criminal actions. I really don’t buy that.
