What I’m Watching: WandaVision

WandaVision: Season 1, Episode 4 “We Interrupt This Program” (B+)

Well, this was a total shift, taking us completely out of the sitcom world we’ve only seen so far and explaining a bit of what’s going on. I couldn’t have been happier to see Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis. I enjoyed her on “2 Broke Girls” back when I used to watch that show, and while she’s great on “Dollface,” it’s even more fun to see her in a much more confident, chatty role. She’s having a blast entertaining herself even if no one else is listening, and she’s in good company with Randall Park from “Fresh Off the Boat” as Jimmy Woo and Josh Stamberg from “The Loudest Voice” and “The Affair” as Director Hayward. It’s nice to see a major dramatic tie-in to the Marvel Cinematic Universe we know from the movies in the form of everyone coming back after the second snap, starting with Monica. Learning that her mother died several years earlier and created protocols for the event of people returning didn’t make her any more prepared for this unexpected mission, which apparently found her inserted into the TV universe, biding her time to introduce a bit of sanity into the illusion. After Darcy couldn’t see anything between Wanda clarifying what Geraldine had said and the end credits, we got the clearest definition of what’s happening so far: that Wanda has created this world to keep Vision safe, since he didn’t get snapped away but instead actually died. I’m definitely curious what this knowledge will push them to try next.
