What I’m Watching: Mr. Mayor

Mr. Mayor: Season 1, Episode 6 “Respect in the Workplace” (B)

This show may be wacky, but it did offer a pretty hilarious send-up of the many complexities of what’s currently seen as acceptable behavior and how the majority of people would rather roll at their eyes at all the rules than actually invest in learning about them. It reminded me of the “Rescue Me” episode where the crew completely destroyed their sensitivity training instructor by being so horrible, and that sort of happened here with the outbursts from each of the team members. I appreciated that Natalie Morales got cast in this role, particularly after her nearly silent part in the disappointing film “The Little Things,” and that, after calmly responding to the stupidity she was encountering, got the chance to explode and chew them each out while covering her burning eyes with the popsicles. That Jayden memorized the answer key so that he could pass the test and get to his food trucks sooner was funny, and it was nice that, after treating him as a punching bag for so long, Mikaela and Tommy gave him the best gift they possibly could have in a special-delivered empanada. I enjoy the banter between Mikaela and Tommy that’s usually quite petty, and Arpi and Neil have also formed an endearing dynamic to warn each other of when they’re potentially crossing a line. Of course Arpi being stuck in the eighties would lead to unfortunate consequences for all, but I did not expect to find out that Neil very well may have been Susan’s time given how much her wife looked like him.
