What I’m Watching: Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist: Season 2, Episode 6 “Zoey’s Extraordinary Reckoning” (B+)

I’m happy to see shows like this tackling systemic racism and the way in which dealing with it isn’t easy or straightforward, and it often requires sitting in the discomfort of realizing the privilege some have that will never allow them to truly understand someone else’s experience. This episode navigated not making Zoey seem like a white savior, especially since she didn’t initially comprehend that she should never have asked Simon to retract his statement even if she was told by higher-ups to do so. Simon is becoming a much more dramatic character, which I like, and it was great to see Tobin take on a more substantial role, one that found him being serious enough to explain how he deflects with humor and then take advantage of speaking up to do some intense flirting. Mo also helped to provide a reality check to Zoey that she couldn’t just come to one of her two Black friends to ask them how to talk to the other one, and the dance numbers featuring people of color were poignant and well-executed. It was good to see Max back and working with the coders, and maybe some of Zoey’s team can end up being regular collaborators with him on that. It was a win for Mo and Max to get funding so easily from Danny, though I did wish that his automatic grant of their requested amount had pushed them to ask for at least double since that appears to be disposable pocket change to him.
