What I’m Watching: 30 Rock

30 Rock: Season 6, Episode 5 “Today You Are a Man” (B)

This was another all-out wacky installment, something that has become par for the course on this series. There was definitely a theme running throughout this episode, emphasizing each person’s specific place and role, and what it is exactly that they’re entitled to, be it respect or a bit of sympathy for their coworkers. Kenneth getting upset that no one noticed he was gone was relatively out of character given his usual obliviousness to everyone’s poor treatment of him, but having Kristen Schaal from “Flight of the Conchords” play his temporary replacement was fun, as was his pep talk from Suze Orman. His well-timed request to Jack for information about other job opportunities may well pan out, and I’m curious to see exactly what Kenneth might be capable of aside from his page duties. Liz using Jack’s own negotiating tactics against him was quite entertaining, particularly because he brought in the furniture in the ice cream store, wore a hearing aid so that she couldn’t talk quietly to him, and then started doing both sides of the negotiation since it was taking too long. The fact that she somehow still beat him was quite funny, and I’m glad that, despite his ultimate victory, he still gave Liz the contract changes she was entitled to because he cares about her. Jenna and Tracy’s Bar Mitzvah visit and horrendous butchering of the “Who’s On First” routine proved decently enlightening for them, though I’m sure it won’t last, and I would hope we don’t have to see any more of their Transformers act ever again.
