What I’m Watching: The Office

The Office: Season 8, Episode 14 “Special Project” (B+)

For all the power trips Dwight has been on in the many years that he has worked in the office, few have involved an actual assignment with some real legitimacy behind it. It’s no surprise that he picked people deemed too essential to be gone from the office for three weeks, and Andy stepping in to recast his choices was inevitable. I liked that Jim had been texted separately by Robert, and after much fretting over how he might respond, he and the recently returned Pam agreed that it would be best for him to go to Tallahassee. The various arguments for why various people should get to go were amusing, particularly Stanley, since he is the only person in the office who watches “Burn Notice,” Ryan, who argued that he and Kelly both have the same skills and only one, but not both, of them should go, and Erin, who wants to clear her head, which Dwight doesn’t recommend doing any more than she already has. I wonder whether Erin’s decision to go to Florida and not come back will pan out. Placing mosquitoes and turning up the heat in the conference room were typical Dwight moves, but I love that he realized he actually has a great team in Jim, Ryan, Erin, Kathy, and Stanley. Kathy’s closing phone call in which she expresses her belief that she and Jim will sleep together is disconcerting, especially since Pam is sure to be stressed out back in Scranton with Angela competing with her to be the better new mom. Darryl’s back-and-forth in terms of reading Val was quite amusing, and I hope that works out sooner than later.
