What I’m Watching: New Girl

New Girl: Season 1, Episode 11 “Jess and Julia” (B+)

I’m so happy that Lizzy Caplan has joined this show in what will hopefully be a semi-permanent basis. After spending two sarcastic seasons as a disgruntled caterer on "Party Down," this is the perfect part for her, and Nick is just the right romantic match for her. I thoroughly enjoyed their back-and-forth at the bar about how they’re seeing other people and not interested in monogamy. What was much more exciting, however, was how she interacted with Jess and the two managed to insult each other for being too serious and too goofy, respectively. Their differing perspectives on how to argue the case were amusing, and it was entertaining to hear them be so frank and honest with each other in describing their negative feelings towards each other, after Jess was initially so excited about having another girl around. It was refreshing also to see Jess have some support from her female friends, and I liked the introduction of Sadie, Jess’ friend from the “lesbian community” who had no trouble resisting Schmidt’s advances. Schmidt’s towel saga was a hilarious subplot, and I loved the revelation that both he and Nick had been using the same towel for months, a towel that Nick never bothered to wash. Watching Winston realize that he’s too obsessed with himself to be able to land a date was a fun process, and I like how he nearly ruined his chances with a bit of public celebration following the successful attainment of a date.
