What I’m Watching: Shameless

Shameless: Season 2, Episode 5 “Father’s Day” (B+)

This show has considerably low standards for its young characters, and anywhere else, seeing Carl and Debs engage in the types of behaviors they did in this hour might be hopelessly disturbing. Renting out a room to a prostitute and starting to drill a hole in the wall to charge for peep shows doesn’t bode well for Carl’s future, and it’s fortunate that Debs ultimately went to Mandy rather than Holly and has learned enough about parenting from her big sister. They’re still going to be very messed-up kids. Of course, that’s not much better than Karen telling the police that she forced herself on Frank and then thanking him for killing her dad. I enjoyed Frank’s effort to get Sheila out of her room: “Even Osama had to come out of the cave eventually,” and her retort, “And look what happened to him!” was even better. This is the second time in just a few weeks that Frank has tried to be with someone just to get the money that’s coming to them, and he’s definitely screwed now that Sheila wants to get married. Veronica is not a woman to be scorned, and it’s a good thing that Kevin was only trying to learn how to read. Her post-it note foreplay made up somewhat for the aggressive and vicious punishment she was ready to carry out earlier that day. Fiona’s day at the fancy wedding nearly turned sour when Richard’s friend thought she was an escort and threatened to out her, but it’s good that he wasn’t too terrible to her, taking her home and confessing that he knew she didn’t go to Princeton. Malik and Ethel exchanging parenting and prison stories was entertaining, and clearly Malik cares about her if he had his dad pay Clyde a visit in the showers. Lip is spiraling increasingly downward, and getting the recommendation meant for Ian to West Point is not going to help matters one bit. In other news, welcome back, Steve! More on that next week, I hope.
