What I’m Watching: Californication

Californication: Season 5, Episode 5 “The Ride-Along” (B)

This was a perfectly enjoyable episode, but I’m just getting the sense that this show is proceeding down a familiar route, and it’s not headed anywhere good for Hank. He’s done so many wrongs and been vindicated so many times that his luck may eventually have to run out. Samurai Apocalypse is a fine season-long guest star, but he’s taking up too much of Hank’s attention, and causing too many indirect problems. Showing up at the restaurant after Becca’s call was a sign of loyalty and maturity on Hank’s part, and it’s sad that he accidentally managed to get him implicated in Tyler’s beating. It’s even more unfortunate due to the fact that Tyler is the one who caused Bates to relapse, which is quite a horrible thing, yet Hank is the one who will incur the fury of the two women he loves more than anyone else in the world. Speaking of women, Kali has her appeal, but she’s hardly worth all of the trouble Hank is going to get himself into once Samurai Apocalypse discovers what they’re up to. He’s been focusing all of his attention on her, and it would be nice to see him go back to being the promiscuous man he always used to be. As always, Charlie is the butt of everyone’s joke, getting mercilessly mocked for his on-camera performance and then embarrassing himself by being less than entirely aware of the genetics and body parts of the friendly prostitute he invited into the police car.
