What I’m Watching: House of Lies

House of Lies: Season 1, Episode 5 “Utah” (B+)

This episode was great because it allowed the various characters to assume different roles and play to previously unseen strengths. Marty seemed on edge enough with his career potentially on the line, despite assurances of his job security from the Rainmaker, and then to discover that his Mormon client was quite the racist didn’t help matters much at all. It’s only logical that he would put the shrewd, short-tempered Jeannie in charge rather than Clyde or Doug, and it was impressive to see her work, although she got about as frustrated as Marty tends to when the typical tactics didn’t work. Though he popped up to invoke the FCA and FMA when the Jewish CFO questioned their numbers, she was the one that brought it home by mentioning the Special K findings that could really get him in trouble. After his cruel remarks to her on the plane, Jeannie did a magnificent job tearing Marty apart, and I’m glad to see her standing up for herself. Up until now Doug has been suffered endlessly, and it was fun to see him get the chance to screw up Clyde by planting doubts in his mind after watching his Mormon virgin eat way corn before their big night. Alone for the night with Rosco, Monica had the opportunity to prove herself to be Worst Mother of the Year by swearing repeatedly in front of her child, keeping him up all night, and then forcing him to take a cab to school in the morning. She makes Marty look good.
