What I’m Watching: Royal Pains

Royal Pains: Season 3, Episode 13 “My Back to the Future” (B+)

I wasn’t thrilled at the prospect of Mark Feuerstein being asked to act for a good portion of this episode due to his bad back, but it wasn’t nearly as lamentable as I might have thought it would be, forgetting that funeral dream scene with the comic coffin placements and the “one day earlier” heading. Evan is smart to try to find a BUD to fill in for Hank, and I like just how initially enthusiastic he was about the rather charming Dr. Van Dyke, whose energy for attaining new retainer clients soon revealed that he didn’t actually see the patients as people. I’d love to see JoAnna Garcia’s Dr. Nina Greene spend some time working for HankMed, since she was a lot of fun and didn’t have all that much to do aside from make both Hank and Jack suspect that she was actually a former child star. The most intense plotline in this hour was what happened with the dishes that Divya was going to sell to get back in the green financially. It’s not often that someone tries to steal from you, succeeds in breaking everything but not getting away with it, and then requires a lengthy steel pole to be removed from its current position, which is pinning his body into a car with gas leaking in the back. It was bothering me that I couldn’t figure out who it was that played Floyd, but it turns out it was none other than Jake Lacy, who in his last TV gig on “Better With You” was engaged to Garcia’s character! What a subtle and unexpected reunion.
