What I’m Watching: Suburgatory

Suburgatory: Season 1, Episode 13 “Sex and the Suburbs” (B+)

This show works mainly because of the relationship between its two protagonists, and that makes an episode like this, where George is spying on Tessa and Tessa is trying not to be spied on, all the more fun. Finding those extra-large condoms sent George spiraling, and I like how Tessa noted that her going on an age-appropriate date was far more acceptable and normal than him inviting only Lisa and Malik for board games, which turned even weirder when he just came out and starting talking about intercourse. Scott, on the other hand, can’t talk about much else besides Africa, making him not right for Dalia but not right for Tessa either, as should have been evident long before he got the goat as part of his courtship. I do enjoy the fact that Tessa is waging a war with Dalia, and therefore she demands that Scott make out with her when Dalia comes by simply to make her jealous. Some people deal with jealously in different ways, as was seen with Dallas, who started to file for a divorce when she found foreign underwear in her laundry. And wouldn’t you know it, in Chatswin, your parents getting a divorce is something to celebrate that makes you cool. George got a frightening taste of his own medicine when he unwisely decided that it would be a good idea to sleep with Jocelyn, who, as Noah points out, is a dangerous person to be handling his food. There’s nothing like a bit of multigenerational learning.
