What I’m Watching: The Office

The Office: Season 8, Episode 13 “Jury Duty” (B)

This episode was entertaining, but there was something a bit off about it. We’ve seen very little this season of both Angela and Pam, and inserting both mothers of Philip back in all of a sudden was a little jolty. It’s been so long since Dwight and Angela were an item that giving Dwight the notion of having a child is strange. That was a theme explored many seasons ago, long before the gay State Senator who leaves the room when Angela breastfeeds was even remotely in the picture. I’m curious how this will affect Dwight in the office, and I’m hopeful that it will be a positive rather than a negative change. Jim skipping a whole week of work after being dismissed for jury duty at noon the first day is quite an abuse of power, and it’s no surprise that everyone in the office was quite upset about it. Dwight’s overt joy at him being fired, or close to it, was intense, and his baby joy seems to have wiped his memory clean, since he now doesn’t so much mind, purporting to sympathize with another father. Bringing his kids in was a rather manipulative trick, but their crying seems to have gotten everyone back on his side. Andy being in the boss’ chair isn’t going all too well, since he’s still pledging too much allegiance to certain employees and doing an unimpressive job of managing the office. It’s not as if anything else could have been expected, but it’s also not nearly as funny as perhaps it should have been.
