What I’m Watching: Alcatraz

Alcatraz: Season 1, Episode 5 “Guy Hastings” (B+)

In what’s sure to become a trend, it took me a few minutes to realize who the actor playing the Alcatraz prisoner-on-the-loose of the week was. It turns out that it was Jim Parrack, who plays the kind-hearted Hoyt Fortenberry on “True Blood,” and whose role here wasn’t nearly as enticing or entertaining. What was successful about this episode was that it delved deep into the mythology of the show, moving it away from being just a procedural, a moniker it has begun to acquire over the past few weeks. Having Parrack play a guard means that this whole plan is larger than many expect, and he manages to be quite honest with Ray about the circumstances that led to him waking up in the present day believing that his whole family was dead. His being a “good guy” makes Emerson’s punishment seem all the more harsh, as he refuses to allow him to see his daughter and will presumably put him into Alcatraz though he doesn’t really deserve to be there. Ray being Tommy’s brother isn’t much of a shock, but it is surprising to learn that present-day Ray is fully aware of Tommy being back and no longer has the desire to do anything to protect his brother. It seems that Ray managed to go under the radar and not getting himself found out, at least not by anyone except for Hastings. Rebecca and Doc finding out that Emerson is tracking their car is sure to backfire, and their investigations will likely be much more secretive going forward.
