What I’m Watching: Californication

Californication: Season 5, Episode 4 “Waiting for the Miracle” (B+)

This show has seen its fair share of dinner parties, but this one might take the cake. On no other show do such explicit discussions about sexuality and sexual partners take place, let alone at the dinner table! What’s different this time around is that Hank is more uncomfortable than usual, since he very often is in the middle of at least two women that want his affection, but this time he didn’t feel that way. Natalie Zea is one of my favorite television actresses, and it’s good to see her pile back on the crazy here as a cross between her characters on “Dirty Sexy Money” and “Justified” with all the foul-mouthed sex talk that pay cable will allow. But what Zea did here was show that Carrie was more than just a nut, getting to the bottom of Hank’s inability to commit: his lingering feelings for Karen. All joking flirtation aside, it’s true that Hank can’t get over his love for Karen, and she knows that he’ll always feel that way too. I’m not sure where this will send Hank, but I suppose it’s sort of a way of setting him free upon the world to continue his sexual conquest of every woman in Los Angeles, regardless of marital status, age, and whatever else. I’m glad that Hank came to the defense of the absent Charlie, who was off having an unexpected and unfulfilling sexual experience of his own with Mary, played by Gillian Vigman in a humorous guest spot.
