What I’m Watching: New Girl

New Girl: Season 1, Episode 12 “The Landlord” (B+)

I like this show most when it pits its characters against one another in a desperate effort to prove something. The common scenario of two cars heading for one parking space turned dangerous quickly as the other guy brandished a gun, but Jess did a marvelous job of talking him down and even getting him to give up the spot just by being nice to him. Deciding that Nick isn’t nice enough was complemented by a fantastic brief return of his ineffective makeshift plumbing, and it was no surprise that he didn’t want to call the landlord. Of course, there was a reason for that, and leave it to Jess to reveal that there are actually four people living in the apartment. Pretending Schmidt was just a visiting cousin proved decently hilarious, and he could have stayed outside the apartment for more than a few minutes to help sell the charade. It was fun to see Jeff Kober, who usually plays the corrupt Jacob Hale on “Sons of Anarchy,” in a somewhat lighter but much creepier role, though he definitely wasn’t into foursomes, just threesomes. Nick being assigned the job of underpants captain and nearly having to kiss Jess led to her breaking down and telling him he was right, and no one likes a gloater. Schmidt reading into everything turned out to be somewhat on the money in terms of his boss wanting him, but what he got out of it was assaulted by security in the parking lot and heavily embarrassed (presumably) should he ever realize that the Tokyo call was in fact a video conference with a whole room full of people.
