What I’m Watching: Justified

Justified: Season 3, Episode 4 “The Devil You Know” (A-)

This show is just all plot, and it’s so fantastic. With practically no new villains introduced in this hour, this was a great chance to see a few of our already established bad guys assert themselves in different ways. Quarles meeting Devil and appealing to his sense of being underused was a fascinating scene, highlighted by his awkward invocation for an amen. The final scene with Devil presenting his case to Boyd with Johnny seemingly at his side ended unforgivingly, as most things tend to on this show, with Boyd coldly shooting him and telling him he should never have thought that he could pull off a betrayal like this. The plan to break Dickie out of prison turned sour quickly as Dewey ended up in on it, and Raylan’s speedily-constructed roadblock forced Ash and the super-serious prison doctor to improvise. Raylan wasted no time in dealing with Ash when he caught him out on his chicken run, running him over twice to make his point. It was nice to see Loretta again, even if just for one scene, as she and Raylan exchanged hazy, secretive statements about what they could and couldn’t say. Learning just why Limehouse didn’t like Arlo was intriguing, and Raylan’s visit with Rachel to see Limehouse wasn’t nearly as subtly volatile as many of his previous run-ins with villains on this show. Limehouse came through for Dickie, but unfortunately he’s left with only $46,000 and should be headed straight back to jail. I’m not so sure about Dewey though, and hopefully he’ll come out of this alive and relatively unscathed.
