What I’m Watching: Parks & Recreation

Parks & Recreation: Season 4, Episode 14 “Operation Ann” (B+)

At first, I thought that this was a repeat of the season two episode “Galentine’s Day.” Instead, it turned out that this was a show doing something smart and logical, not reusing the same themes but instead sensibly portraying the annual celebration, by Leslie, of her revisionist holiday. This episode was most about finding romance for Ann, which was fun because of the different results it produced from her colleagues. Jerry’s male escort was perhaps the most embarrassing, though some of Tom’s choices were objectionable as well, though not quite as much as his selections for Ron’s assistant several seasons back. The fact that April was the one to set her up, with Tom no less, was quite sweet, and I like how they were having a nice time until Tom ruined it by suggesting that they go home together, immediately regretful of having screwed up his chances. Leslie’s twenty-five-clue scavenger hunt for her date location was entertaining, especially because it showcased Ron’s surprising love for riddles and Andy’s inept search that included the location of a mere three clues and a suspicious awesome tree branch. Meeting at the memorial Lil’ Sebastian was very clever, and I’m glad that Leslie and Ben are so happy to be with each other. Chris’ depression following his breakup with Millicent is saddening, but I’m sure he’ll be able to find joy again soon, though I’m not sure exactly what it is that did briefly and will ultimately help him snap out of it. That music was not impressive.
