Emmy Nominees: Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series

My predictions: 3/6, missing Armisen, Driver, and Ferguson

Somehow, I did better predicting this race this year than I did last year. Truth be told, aside from the unfortunate omission of the late Christopher Evan Welch, whose show managed a Best Comedy Series bid, this list is actually pretty decent. Former two-time winner Eric Stonestreet is permanently banished, while costar Ed O’Neill, who isn’t trying all that much, is also out. We get to keep Ty Burrell (Modern Family) and Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family), and while the former is the only one who gets praise, the latter is actually still delivering a pretty fantastic performance. I didn’t realize that Keegan Michael-Key and Jordan Peele were on the ballot last year, so the presumed enthusiasm for them might not exist, but it turns out I just picked the wrong alternative star, since Fred Armisen (Portlandia) was also on the ballot last year! Kudos to Andre Braugher (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), who is not only the lone representative for this show aside from a stunt nomination but also earns his eighth Emmy nomination for his sixth nominated role. Rounding out the list is the terrific defending champ, Tony Hale (Veep), and another actor I’m far less enthusiastic about, Adam Driver (Girls), who, while good, doesn’t really belong in this category this year.

Who should win? Hale, though I have to catch up on Armisen and Braugher’s shows
Who will win? It could be Burrell or Ferguson finally, but I think Hale takes it again.
