Emmy Predictions: Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series

The 66th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations will be announced on Thursday, July 10th. Please refer to my Emmy musings for this category for a detailed analysis of the contenders, and, as always, chime in below in the comments with any thoughts of your own.

Last year’s nominees: Jonathan Banks, Bobby Cannavale, Jim Carter, Peter Dinklage, Mandy Patinkin, Aaron Paul

The competition: Count two of these men out since they’re no longer on their shows: Banks and Cannavale. It seems impossible that Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) and Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) could be snubbed for highly acclaimed seasons of their shows, and the question is whether their cast members will join them. I think the one with the best shot is Dean Norris (Breaking Bad), and behind him are Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), Kit Harington (Game of Thrones), Bob Odenkirk (Breaking Bad), and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Game of Thrones). It’s unclear if Jim Carter (Downton Abbey) or Mandy Patinkin (Homeland) will be back this year after less praised years, and past nominees Brendan Coyle (Downton Abbey) and Josh Charles (The Good Wife) may be back instead. I feel like they can’t all be nominated, but watch out for three major new players: Peter Sarsgaard (The Killing), Jon Voight (Ray Donovan), and Jeffrey Wright (Boardwalk Empire).

The predicted nominees: Josh Charles, Peter Dinklage, Dean Norris, Aaron Paul, Jon Voight, Jeffrey Wright

The predicted winner: Charles?
