Emmy Predictions: Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series
The 66th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations will be announced on Thursday, July 10th. Please refer to my Emmy musings for this category for a detailed analysis of the contenders, and, as always, chime in below in the comments with any thoughts of your own.
Last year’s nominees: Morena Baccarin, Christine Baranski, Emilia Clarke, Anna Gunn, Christina Hendricks, Maggie Smith
The competition: All of these nominees are eligible this year, and it’s possible that five of them will be back. The sixth, Morena Baccarin (Homeland), didn’t have the material this year to merit a nomination. I’m not sure that Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) or Christine Baranski (The Good Wife) did either. It’s a question of whether past nominees like Joanne Froggatt (Downton Abbey) or January Jones (Mad Men) will be back, or great actresses on shows not yet honored like Erika Christensen (Parenthood) or Monica Potter (Parenthood) will finally earn recognition. Or could other actresses on previously recognized shows like Lena Headey (Game of Thrones) or Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) be nominated? After locks Anna Gunn (Breaking Bad) and Maggie Smith (Downton Abbey) and likely nominee Christina Hendricks (Mad Men), there is a diverse slate of contenders, including Annabeth Gish (The Bridge), Michelle Monaghan (True Detective), Molly Parker (House of Cards), Bex Taylor-Kraus (The Killing), and Bellamy Young (Scandal).
The predicted nominees: Emilia Clarke, Joanne Froggatt, Anna Gunn, Lena Headey, Christina Hendricks, Maggie Smith
The predicted winner: Gunn
