Emmy Predictions: Best Guest Actress in a Comedy Series

The 66th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations will be announced on Thursday, July 10th. Please refer to my Emmy musings for this category for a detailed analysis of the contenders, and, as always, chime in below in the comments with any thoughts of your own.

Last year’s nominees: Dot-Marie Jones, Melissa Leo, Melissa McCarthy, Molly Shannon, Elaine Stritch, Kristen Wiig

The competition: Let’s start with the returning contenders, who would make nominations four and three, respectively: Dot-Marie Jones (Hot in Cleveland) and Melissa McCarthy (Saturday Night Live). The other four aren’t in the running, but a bunch of past nominees are: Kristin Chenoweth (Glee), Tina Fey (Saturday Night Live), and Gwyneth Paltrow (Glee). Elizabeth Banks (Modern Family), Linda Cardellini (New Girl), and Jane Krakowski (Modern Family) are all recent nominees for other parts, and Joan Cusack (Shameless) is making the switch from drama to comedy after three consecutive nominations. Acclaimed actresses famous for other parts might be honored, like Ellen Burstyn (Louie), Octavia Spencer (Mom), Tatiana Maslany (Parks and Recreation), June Squibb (Girls), and Kerry Washington (Saturday Night Live), and Celia Weston (Modern Family) could be Emmy voters’ cup of tea too. Watch out, however, for a new show with a number of contenders: Uzo Aduba (Orange is the New Black), Laverne Cox (Orange is the New Black), Natasha Lyonne (Orange is the New Black), and Taryn Manning (Orange is the New Black).

The predicted nominees: Uzo Aduba, Elizabeth Banks, Ellen Burstyn, Laverne Cox, Melissa McCarthy, Kerry Washington

The predicted winner: Washington
