Emmy Predictions: Best Writing for a Drama Series

The 66th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations will be announced on Thursday, July 10th. Please refer to my Emmy musings for this category for a detailed analysis of the contenders, and, as always, chime in below in the comments with any thoughts of your own.

Last year’s nominees: Dead Freight (Breaking Bad), Say My Name (Breaking Bad), Episode 4 (Downton Abbey), The Rains of Castamere (Game of Thrones), Q and A (Homeland)

The competition: Expect “Breaking Bad” to dominate again, earning at least two nominations if not more. Felina is a lock, and I suspect both Granite State and Ozymandias will show up too. As usual, “Downton Abbey” picked just one hour, Episode 1, and “House of Cards” also opted for Chapter 14 only. I’d watch out for Time Zones and Waterloo from the once-popular “Mad Men,” as well as The Secret Fate of All of Life, the only option for “True Detective.” In terms of other new shows, I suspect “Masters of Sex” may contend for its pilot, and “The Bridge,” “Ray Donovan,” and “Turn” could too.

The predicted nominees: Felina (Breaking Bad), Granite State (Breaking Bad), Ozymandias (Breaking Bad), Episode 1 (Downton Abbey), The Secret Fate of All of Life (True Detective)

The predicted winner: “Felina”
